Dubai, is considered to be one of the best destinations available for tourists traveling to the Middle East. As a matter of fact, many consider it to be a destination to be desired for entire world community. There are many attractions such as the famous Dubai Marina, but maybe you have not heard of all of them. One thing that you will find is that there are attractions in Dubai that you will not find any place else in form and/or substance. For instance, if you were to visit the Burj Al Arab, a structure that many think symbolizes the city, you would find what others consider to be a seven star hotel. Again, uniquely positioned, it is about 828 meters tall.)
There are no buildings in the world that match its height. Probably the most talked about attraction is the Palm Jumeirah, which is a man-made island with a number of luxury villas. What makes it unique is not the villas, but the fact that it is made into the shape of a palm tree and can be seen for many miles overhead. Typically when you see pictures taken of Dubai they are representative of this.
One thing that many shoppers and teenagers alike appreciate about Dubai is that it is known to have some of the best shopping in the Middle East (and in the entire world). No trip to Dubai is complete without a visit to its shopping malls. Still another notable location is the Palm Hotel and Atlantis. The Palm hotel is located at the Crescent.
Another notable factor regarding Dubai is that it is a preferred destination for the rich and famous. Seemingly the destination provides them with the level of service and comfort that their financial situation affords for them. It is easy to think otherwise when one sees reports as it has over the years about people form the west being jailed for misjudging the culture. Typically, westerners contextualize the UAE society from their own perspective and not the perspective of the citizens. This is probably true of the media who reports on it also.
This lack of perspective leads to a rather wrong portrayal of Dubai in popular media; which leads to the need for some discretion about what one should and should not do while in Dubai. There are some things that westerners need to know as a result, which could be the difference between an enjoyable trip and a not so enjoyable time in a land and culture one does not full understand.
Dubai is a Muslim country which has a value code that definitive. The city itself is very accepting of varying cultures (the west in context of this article); however, there is an insistence that the Muslim culture must be recognized and respected. You will see these two factors together in several instances in Dubai.
Because the city caters to western travelers, you would find that alcohol is served and beachwear can be worn and generally things would look like any other vacation taking place in a western country. However, this is not going to be acceptable when one is not at their particular accommodations or resort. Public places are not the venues to wear clothing that is controversial (short skirts, tops etc.).
You would also not find the culture very accepting of affection (kissing, sensual touching) that is enacted in public. In general, this does not mean that you cannot hold a boyfriend or girlfriend's hand; but open sensuality is not acceptable and should wait until out of the public eye. Note, this is not necessarily a casual warning; failure to adhere to this may put you on the inside of a jail.
On the heels of this, if you are an unmarried couple, you should definitely look to book separate hotel rooms. It is literally against the law in Dubai for couples to live together without being married. This will probably not necessarily be a problem for most of the people in most of the time they spend in Dubai. However, if you end up in a situation where the police are involved in your affairs; there could be a problem if your marriage arrangements or lack thereof are made known.
Back to the serving of alcohol, which was mentioned as being acceptable in most if not all of the restaurants in Dubai. But leaving your restaurant having had more than enough to drink is not tolerated. Dubai officials consider drunk driving as something very serious, which could leave you with a much longer jail time than you might find in a western country like the United States. What does this mean to a western traveler? This means that you could be in jail longer than overnight. The simple solution is to find another driver even if that driver drives a taxicab. This is exemplified in many ways when you see people at the Dubai Marina.
Even if you are not drunk, don't drive in an offensive manner so that you get upset with someone and express yourself by giving them a sign with your middle finger. Unlike western countries again, this is more offensive than you might think. As a result, if you are to get angry wait until you get someplace else where you can release your anger. That kind of behavior can land you in jail.
Jail time also awaits those who write checks that cannot be cashed, in Dubai. The laws and administrative officials are not too forgiving when it comes to financial matters. As a result make sure that you do not over obligate yourself financially. It seems to be common sense; but these are very common western offenses. If you can avoid them, you can have a fruitful and restful vacation.
