One of things I noticed the last time I was in Dubai was that they seem to be getting into Closed Circuit Television or CCTV. It seems to be the concern of both Dubai Business and Dubai Citizens I have to wonder why that is. If you were to listen to most of the officials in the United Arab Emirates they would tell you that it is all about public safety. I think I would have to say, if that is the case it is very good thing. One thing that everyone, including me, worries about is just how safe you are going to be while you are in a foreign country. Dubai is just like any other country in that way, they are making great strides as they become more of a cosmopolitan looking travel destination.
The idea of having cameras to monitor the whereabouts of individuals is and should be of concern. There is always the possibility that something that somebody see could be used against you falsely. I understand that fully. But, there is also the case where if somebody is doing to do something to you in broad daylight, they might be deterred in doing it. Then, you just have to avoid doing silly things that will make you unsafe. That to me is an extra comfort if the cameras become widespread in their use in Dubai especially for the Dubai Business owners who cater to tourists.
If Dubai is going to become a world class city, the Dubai Hotels and even the longer term Dubai apartments need to be relatively safe. If you were to look at the cities in England where this has been employed, you would find out that if you choose the centers of activities, there are likely hundreds of CCTVs pointed at you. Of course, as always there are privacy concerns, but I don't think that I saw that expressed while I was there. It seemed to me that people looked at it as a way to fight terrorism and they were going to have to live with it. Working with a Dubai Business as a foreigner, that does not necessarily give me a good feeling.
In recent times there was a military officer that was killed in a Dubai Hotel was observed on CCTV; although this person has not been caught, it is possible that he can be as the random act was caught on tape. The fact that it was shown internationally, will be a deterrent for those who want to do something similar. When I think about that, I wish there were more of them in the United States.
Ultimately, my trip was safer because I was not in common tourist traps as I visited various attractions. I was typically leaving from a Dubai apartment. Being out of the mainstream and even the site of some of the more intrusive CCTVs meant that I had the best of both worlds, privacy and safety.
